Media: Protest Rally at Lake Loon Community Centre

I am pleased and honoured to serve as counsel for the Lake Loon-Cherry Brook Community Development Association, and its efforts to preserve the Lake Loon Community Centre.  For those unaware, the Community Centre has been at the center of this historical, African-Canadian community for the past several decades.  The land is owned by the community; however, there is presently an ongoing conflict versus Halifax Regional Municipality over rightful ownership.  All documents present would support the contention that the government does not own this parcel of land, and cannot order the forced demolition of this historic structure.  Hopefully, HRM will ‘do the right thing,’ and relinquish its bid to expropriate the Community’s land.

Today, there was a great turnout for the protest rally — with dozens of members of the community showing up, and wielding protest signs.  I was also pleased by the appearance of both television and print media.  Onward ….

I just seen the news and so happy Mr. Brett that you are fighting this. The government thinks they own everything and makes decisions for the people. Its too bad haven’t voted my entire life because they are all crooked. Well the first year I was allowed and that was all. You ask me hrm should tear it down and build you a new one. What else are they going to do with all the tax dollars besides fill their own pocktets. They want to steal and sell that land for triple the cost. All those involved could put more time and money towards the deficit they owe on the bridges at least. I can’t offer much but if there is anything I can do, please let me know. I’d be more than happy to take an hour of news.

The city is in no shortage of mishandling funds….just ask Peter Kelly for nothing. It would be nice to see them do something good and productive for a change! It may be structurally sound but I say let them tear it down and build the community a new one. That will unfortunately raise your taxes it that area though. They’ll make you pay regardless. Weird how we can’t put the real crooks in jail…lol

Here is the Global news coverage. The reporter’s opening statement is pretty ignorant, but Brenton, Derek & Billy had some good quotes.
